In this module we will follow the flow of the mighty Whitewater River as it tumbles down the mountainside into the ancient woodland of Mourne Park, which is in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland.
Many animals live here, including a large number of mammals, birds and fish. We are going to focus on three in particular:
Dipper
Kingfisher
Salmon and Trout
Our Space To Learn camera network records these animals in the wild as they travel past, triggering the AI cameras and sensors. Pupils from certain Northern Ireland schools visit the woodland to explore their habitat, and to find signs of life.
Monitoring the mountains provides an overview of the prevailing weather conditions as they approach the woodland
Moisture Sensing
Underwater Camera in action – in Wiltshire
The big flood of November 2023
The camera and sensing equipment is always running, night and day. Experiments that are created by children in Northern Ireland and in England connect into that network so that together we can uncover and explore this special environment.
Flowing past the Schoolhouse is a stream, known locally as the Sheugh (pronounced ‘shuck’)
It meanders through the woodland until flowing into the Whitewater. We use the Sheugh for some experiments as well.
Pupil Moisture Level Monitoring Experiements running by day
..and by night
We can all learn from pupil experimentation data – it is a team effort!
Today
There are many types of activity available, all of which are linked to the River theme.
Depending on which activities your school or organisation has chosen,
the following links will be live for you to follow in our session:
Moisture Sensor
Water Flow
Water Level
Hydrophone
Timelapse
Rain Capture
Each theme also offers a wellbeing focus, which is designed to help young people to reach their full potential through improved confidence and higher levels of engagement.
